Under normal condition Pangasius sutchi becomes sexually mature during the second year of their life. There was not any recorded evidence for their natural breeding in Sri Lanka. Therefore induced spawning of Pangasius sutchi were used by inoculation of pituitary extraction. Pituitary extract of Tilapia will use as the agent for induced spawning. Thus pituitary glands of tilapia should be removed and pituitary extraction will be prepared
Induced breeding is a
technique of fish breeding in confined water, stimulated by artificial hormone
administration which is gonadotropin. There were various spawning agents. But
in this case pituitary extract of tilapia have been used to inducing spawning
of Pangasius sutchi.
Main
objective of this research is artificial breeding of fish species which they
have not bred in natural conditions of Sri Lanka. This technique can be used
for the species in fresh water and marine water.
Economically
demanded fish species (Not bred naturally in Sri Lanka) are imported and
therefore ornamental fish owners should have to incur large fund of money to
buy these species. If this technology successful, they have to pay a small
amount of money because there is no need to import them and can be minimized
the cost. In addition to that those fishes will be exported.
Pangasius
sutchi is a large fresh water cat fish and they are
popular and commercially valuable
ornamental fish.
It has not been recorded that they breed
successful in captivity of Sri Lanka.
A gravid female have a bulging belly
which is swollen and soft while the urogenital oval shape is reddish in color
which is much bigger than the male. The release of yellow eggs is eminent when
abdomen is pressed or when holds at the caudal and fold its body above
water. While the male have a slender body and belly is not swollen. The
urogenital-oval shape is narrow and smaller than the female and when the belly
is pressed, it releases white milt.
Males
and females are easily distinguished
particularly around April. Egg-bearing females are identified by their big,
soft and distended belly with swollen and reddish pink vent.Males could easily
be identified by their
reddish genital opening and releasing of milt, when the abdomen is pressed.
